Hello Hilltop Family! It's 5 Essential time! You've heard us say "do your 5 Essentials" over and over these past few months and we bet you are wondering what those are or maybe you don't remember and need a refresher. Don't worry, we'll tell ya! PS it's always good to have a refresher :) Each of the 5 are essential to your health (hence why we call them Essentials of Health). This means that if one is missing or even partially missing from your life then you won't get the most out of your life: you will not have the true health and the real happiness that everyone strives for. Even if you are excellent at one of them. That is because they all need to happen in conjunction with one another and need to be done consistently to ensure proper health in the body. So you can't eat an organic smoothie for breakfast every day and eat junk food the rest of the day and expect to have optimal health. It doesn't work that way. The more effort you put into these Essentials, the more you are going to get out of them... the better your body will function and therefore, the healthier you will be. And guess what, as a side effect of having a properly functioning body is that you feel good! Little, if any, pain and symptoms (of course there are exceptions to this rule). Unfortunately, it is not the other way around. Feeling good does not equal true health. The fact that most people think that it does is the crux of why our country is so unhealthy. If you don't think that we are unhealthy, just look at the statistics for chronic diseases, of which you don't always feel forming until it's too late sometimes: 1 in 2 people are expected to die from heart disease and 1 in 3 people are expected to die from cancer- both preventable diseases by the way- so between you and Dr Brittany, one of you may die of heart disease.That equals a sick country in our opinion. Speaking of prevention... it is kind of a foreign concept in our country because the mainstream idea of healthcare is the sit and wait method then throw drugs and surgery at it (things that are outside the body's natural, innate healing) without really finding the CAUSE. Which as we have discussed previously, the cause of basically every disease known to man (besides the less than 10% of diseases that are truly genetic in nature) is the lack of proper 5 Essentials self care. This reaction based, outside in kind of care should really be called sick care, not health care because that is technically what is going on: you are taking care of the body AFTER something- sickness, disease, illness, symptoms... what ever word you want to use to describe dysfunction in the body- is already there and has probably been there for quite some time, otherwise you wouldn't have the symptoms that brought you to the doctor in the first place (remember symptoms are your warning signs of a problem). The thing is, it is a lot harder to get the body healthy after it has already been dysfunctional for some time. You know that saying, "it's easier to put out a small fire than a big wild fire?" This is the same for your body. Doing something BEFORE symptoms and disease show up, to prevent dysfunction, gives your body a better opportunity to thrive in life. Not just survive as you are doing when you follow the medical model and don't do the 5 Essentials to the maximum of your ability. Don't get us wrong, we are not against the medical system completely. We just think that the medical system isn't suited for wellness and prevention care, that medication (prescription and over the counter) and surgery should be reserved for emergency or crisis situations, which is what medicine does best after all, and as a last resort when it comes to treatment because all medical interventions have risks. So the more conservative you can be with to start, the less damage can be done as side effects and adverse reactions (and possible death), which there are a lot of in the medical world. In fact, the 3rd leading cause of death in our country is death due to medical intervention complications and errors. So we say 5 Essentials first, then drugs second and surgery last because of this and because once you enter the medical system, it's very hard to get your body to return to its natural, normal, optimal, innate state of being. Not impossible, for most, with some effort but it does take time to undo the damage, which you have to do every time first when it comes to treating anything unless of course you are a baby and even then we have some damage that could have been caused in utero to undo. And once we get to a point where the damage has reduced substantially (enough to allow the innate healing to work on its own at a higher level again without relying on the outside interventions), we can then rebuild the health and work toward prevention mode: having a body that has innate expressing itself at max capacity and resists outside forces to maintain optimal health. We also call this wellness. Ask Dr Brittany to share her health transformation story with you the next time you see her, she knows this process all too well. So how can you get into prevention mode and avoid the potential risks of medical intervention? Follow the 5 Essentials. Which are: 1.Nerve Supply Your spine is your body's central information highway. It houses and protects the nervous system, which is the control center of your body. It literally carries information between the brain and the body to allow the normal functions of the body to take place. The amount of nerve supply that passes between the brain and the body through the spine is determined by how close to normal the spine is aligned and determines the status of health of the individual. With zero nerve supply, the organs and other tissues of the body would just be pieces of flesh, inanimate objects that do nothing. We call this death of course. With decreased nerve supply (anything less than 100%), the organs and body systems become dysfunctional and we call this dis-ease. Yes, that's dis-ease not disease. Dis-ease of the body can lead to disease if not treated correctly. Proper spinal alignment (through chiropractic adjustments and appropriate spinal hygiene) aids in maximizing nerve supply, making sure that the proper information is communicated to each cell in the body. This ensures optimal health of the body. Note: as you can imagine, one or two adjustments here or there will NOT cut it if optimal health is your goal as your life is negatively affecting your spine and therefore your health every single day. More on that later. 2.Mindset It is your mindset that will ultimately influence your success. The pressures of our busy lives result in increased stress, worry, sleeplessness, and can cause mental health disorders as well as other health problems (we will talk about how emotional stress affects the immune system later). This Essential encompasses areas such as time and stress management, improving your relationships with others (including your relationship with yourself), and making sure that you get adequate amounts of sleep. Working on all of these areas help to ensure a positive attitude and help your overall peace and well-being- creating a happier life. The right, renewed mindset about life and health are necessary in order to commit to following any lifestyle plan. 3.Nutrition A diet that focuses on natural whole food sustains your mental and physical well-being, aids in disease prevention, and helps you maintain an ideal weight. It is more than eating something to fill your belly with and to be sustained by for the day. Food is fuel. It is literal information you are feeding your body. Every nutrient (vitamins and minerals) is essential to give to your body because it doesn't make them on its own. If it did, we wouldn't need to eat at all. Without proper nutrients, your body is basically running on sugar and chemicals, two things your body does not process well at all (no wonder most people have energy and fatigue issues in our country). 4.Oxygen and Lean Muscle Exercise allows your body to take in higher levels of oxygen and creates lean muscle that keeps both your body and mind healthy. Oxygen is a necessary power source for your cells. Without enough of it, your cells become dysfunctional and abnormal and seek alternate power sources which only creates more dysfunction and can lead to disease. Lean muscle is important for many things like balance and coordination, reducing injuries of any kind, and is part of a healthy metabolism. Not to mention important for the spinal structure in order to maintain alignment. Flabby muscle (Dr. Brittany's term for abnormal muscle tone that is often found in overweight and out of shape people but not exclusively) on the other hand get tight easier, get sore easier, and therefore can lead to injury easier. This kind of muscle can also cause your spine to subluxate (misalign) easier and as we discussed above, this can lead you away from optimal health. 5.Minimize Toxin Exposure Toxins and chemicals surround us in our everyday lives and are included in items such as medications, refined/processed foods, personal care products, household cleaners, and the items we cook with. Each of these toxins affect our bodies in a negative way and inhibit us from functioning at optimal levels, mostly because toxins that stay in the body get stored in our cells and can use up all of the resources of the cell necessary to maintain it's health. This is not due to lack of trying on the body's part though. We just have an extreme amount of toxins that we are exposed to in this day and age that the body cannot possibly keep up. That is why lessening the toxin load your body deals with helps you maintain optimal health.
